Broadway producers announced Monday that a musical adaptation of the 1999 film "10 Things I Hate About You" will officially open on August 17, 2027. The creative team said the show will follow two sisters as they work to define themselves on their own terms.
Lena Dunham, creator of the television series "Girls," will write the book for the musical. Dunham's 2026 memoir "Famesick" debuted at number one on the New York Times bestseller list. Carly Rae Jepsen, a two-time Grammy nominee known for the song "Call Me Maybe," will write the music and lyrics. Both announced the news on Instagram on Monday.
The musical is based on the 1999 romcom, which adapted Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew" to a California high school setting. The film starred Julia Stiles as the rebellious Kat Stratford and featured a performance by Heath Ledger. In January 2025, Stiles told People magazine that the film remained what audiences most recognized her for and said she appreciated its lasting legacy.
