Alejandro Davidovich, ranked 27th in the ATP standings, withdrew from the US Open entry list (30 August to 13 September) on Thursday after failing to recover in time from the back injury that has kept him from competing. The 27-year-old Spanish tennis player was absent from recent training sessions in Monte Carlo, where he lives, as he was not fit enough to play matches over five sets.
Davidovich has not competed since the quarter-finals of the Umag 250 Open, where he lost to Alex Molcan on clay. Since then, he has withdrawn from Estoril and the two hard-court Masters 1000 events in North America: Montreal and Cincinnati.
The Spanish player was also unable to be called up by David Ferrer, the national team selector, for the Davis Cup team facing Chile on 19 and 20 September in Santiago. Davidovich is expected to be sidelined for more than a month and a half, with plans to return at the Chengdu 250 Open (23-29 September) on the Asian tour, followed by commitments in Tokyo and the Shanghai Masters 1000.
At the US Open, where he was set to be one of the 32 seeded players, Davidovich will lose the 50 points he earned in the second round in the previous edition. The prolonged inactivity could drop him out of the top 30 by the end of the American tournament.
