The FX limited series "Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette" generated high expectations to capture the tragic couple and their era, especially after test photos circulated online. Despite the risks, the series dominated internet discourse throughout its nine episodes and received seven Emmy nominations, including outstanding limited series, one for lead actress Sarah Pidgeon, and recognition for its period costumes.
Producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson explained that the main challenge was understanding both what was known about the couple and what remained unknown. Simpson noted that Bessette had become a "posthumous influencer," though most of what people knew about her was purely visual. "We had to find her voice based on descriptions, and we knew from research that she was incredibly warm and funny," Simpson said.
The producers were unaware of the extent of Carolyn fan accounts on Instagram and TikTok, but Simpson commented that she constantly appeared in costume designers' pitches as a reference for "quiet luxury." When the first photos from the series leaked, social media reacted with concern that it would be a disaster, something that surprised the producers. "It showed us the depth of the reach to people who weren't even alive when she was," Simpson noted.
Simpson also explained that New York has changed significantly since the nineteen-nineties, with glass skyscrapers and bicycle lanes. However, the production team was fortunate that the main filming locations, Tribeca and Lexington Avenue, retained their original appearance. Iconic restaurants such as Indochine, The Odeon and Bubby's, which the couple frequented, remain standing and were used in the series.
Simpson described episode eight, "Exit Strategy," which shows the couple in a loft as their marriage falls apart, as particularly challenging in tonal terms. Ryan Murphy proposed a "closed episode" to show marital tensions, and writers Connor Hines and Juli Weiner treated it like a stage play, with actors rehearsing on weekends and constantly rewriting. The wedding episode also presented logistical difficulties in recreating Georgia and capturing the romance of the event.
