Marbelis Peña, mother of 27-year-old Sergeant Second Class Miguel Eduardo Ramos Peña of the Bolivarian National Guard, denounced her son's conviction and demanded a thorough review of his case. According to his mother, the trial was processed irregularly.

The serviceman is held in Yare prison in Miranda state after being excluded from early release measures that benefited other inmates. Peña described the sentence as a "setup" related to a commander's promotion.
