Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan surprised the world on Tuesday afternoon by announcing they are moving back to the United Kingdom, six years after leaving their roles as active members of the royal family and relocating to California. The move will take place before the end of the month, and their two children—Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5—will start school in the United Kingdom in September. According to reports, it is unclear how long the couple will remain in the United Kingdom, but they will maintain their status as non-active members of the royal family.

In recent years, there have been tensions between Harry and his family members in the United Kingdom, particularly with his older brother, Prince William. These issues intensified after Harry published his memoir, Spare, in January 2023. According to People, King Charles III learned of the couple's plans only last weekend and apparently welcomes the opportunity to see the Sussex family more in a private and personal context.

The Duke of Sussex has been slowly repairing his relationship with his father over the past few years. Last month, the Sussexes visited Charles and Queen Camilla at their private residence, Highgrove House. It was the first time Archie and Lilibet had seen their grandfather in four years.

However, during that visit, Harry apparently had no interaction with William. "It is very broken," a source told People regarding the relationship between the brothers. "I thought perhaps it might have eased up by now, to be honest. But there has been no progress, particularly from William's side. There is no contact." The Prince and Princess of Wales have not publicly commented on the Sussexes' move, but it was reported that the news surprised the couple. The last time Harry saw his brother was in 2023, at his father's coronation.
