The purpose of perspiration was a mystery in 1775, when English physician Charles Brian Blagden and some curious friends subjected themselves to experiments by spending time in rooms heated to more than 230°F (110°C). Although the temperatures were high enough to cook raw meat placed in those rooms, Blagden observed how human bodies withstood the heat. Core body temperatures remained practically constant whilst sweat poured out and evaporated.
