Thiago Tirante, ranked 50th in the world and fresh from defeating Novak Djokovic in the second round, defeated Martín Landaluce on Monday at the Cincinnati Masters 1000. The Argentine prevailed 7-6(5) and 7-6(4), halting the Spanish player's winning streak. Landaluce was ranked 57th.
Landaluce had broken a streak of five consecutive defeats by beating Jack Draper and later Matteo Arnaldi. The Madrid-based player had a set point in the tenth game of the second set, but Tirante managed to come back to win both tiebreaks. Óscar Burrieza, Landaluce's coach, watched the match from the stands.
Martín, called up by David Ferrer for the national team at the Davis Cup that will visit Chile on 19 and 20 September, now turns his attention to the US Open. The Spaniard will not compete in the Winston-Salem tournament next week.
Tirante is experiencing his best professional moment and has achieved his best career ranking. The Argentine reached the quarter-finals the previous week in Montreal and has his second appearance in the quarter-finals of a Masters 1000.
