US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth raised with his Colombian counterpart, retired general Jorge Mora, the possibility of conducting joint operations against the ELN. The proposal is part of a broader Washington strategy that places the armed group among its priority objectives in the region.
According to officials, coordination between the two countries would seek to intensify actions against the ELN's December 6th Front, which operates in specific areas of Colombian territory. The initiative reflects the US administration's commitment to strengthening military and defence cooperation with Bogotá.
Hegseth's proposal adds to the diplomatic and security efforts Washington has been pursuing regarding illegal armed groups in Latin America. Authorities indicated that details of possible operations would be defined in coordination with Colombian military institutions.
