Warming seas are shifting the marine ecosystem around Britain, with native species migrating to cooler northern waters while unusual warm-water fish become increasingly familiar to coastal observers.
Kurt Lander, skipper of the Yellowfin charter boat operating from Brighton, recently spotted a pair of sunfish lying on their sides and flapping their fins in the middle of the Channel shipping lane. The fish perform this behaviour as a visual attraction to birds, which eat parasites off their skin, Lander said.
As ocean temperatures rise, once-rare visitors to British waters are becoming more common sights along the coast.
