During the UK heatwave, a father and daughter from Leeds, West Yorkshire, moved their sleeping arrangements outdoors to escape the heat in their house. They set up camp in their garden, and before bed, watched swifts swoop overhead in the orange evening light as they played catch.

Later that night, the father heard an animal and attempted to wake his daughter, discovering a vixen drinking from the pond. The girl initially missed the encounter, having slept through her father's first attempt to rouse her.

The next morning, after learning about the nocturnal visitor, she asked her father to pull her toe if the fox returned, a signal she would recognize even while sleeping.
