The national Government will begin this Tuesday the coordination of Pope Leo XIV's visit, whose arrival in Argentina is scheduled for between 8 and 11 November 2026. The first meeting will be led by Karina Milei, Secretary General of the Presidency, and will include Cabinet members, primarily security officials, authorities from the City of Buenos Aires and representatives of the Catholic Church.
From the Catholic Church, Archbishop of Buenos Aires Monsignor Jorge García Cuerva and priests Matías Taricco and Máximo Jurcinovic will attend. The three are part of the national commission established by the Episcopal Conference to organise the visit together with other ecclesiastical officials, including the president of the Episcopal Conference, Monsignor Marcelo Colombo.
The papal visit will be the first in almost 40 years following John Paul II's arrival in 1987. During his regional tour, the Supreme Pontiff will also visit Uruguay and Peru. National authorities have confirmed that, as it is an official visit, the Pope will have a private meeting with President Javier Milei.
The coordination will involve the City of Buenos Aires, the Province of Buenos Aires and Córdoba, with the Pope visiting the Basilica of Luján and making stops in Buenos Aires and Córdoba. Social movements and Congress have put forward initiatives for the Pope to participate in activities in popular neighbourhoods and to declare the days of the visit as non-working days.
The Argentine Episcopal Conference has created an official hymn for the visit and has called for a National Collection on 22 and 23 to cover the costs of the papal tour. Deputy Jorge Taiana, from Unión por la Patria, proposed that the days of the visit be declared non-working days so the population can participate in the activities.
