The city of Buenaventura is facing a health emergency following the earthquake recorded on August 10. Hospitals in the area report collapsed capacity for patient care, while communication routes remain interrupted, complicating patient transfers and access to medical services.

The Government is strengthening emergency response by sending medical supplies, hospital tents and reactivating the ship Benkos Biohó to expand care capacity. Authorities are seeking to prevent the situation from developing into a larger health crisis in the region.

Specialists are analysing the measures needed to contain the effects of the emergency on the local health system. Santiago Tobón Orrego, doctor and surgeon at the Clínica de las Américas in Medellín, has examined the issue in statements to specialised media.
