Buckingham Palace, the official residence of British monarchs since 1837, will undergo a comprehensive ten-year renovation funded through a temporary increase in the Sovereign Grant, which covers the official duties of the royal family. The work will be completed in March 2027.
The renovation, costing 369 million pounds, includes replacement of ageing cables, lead piping, wiring and boilers, many of which have not been replaced for sixty years. According to the authorities, the aim is to reduce the risks of fire and flooding.
During the renovation period, King Charles III and Queen Camilla will reside at Clarence House, located eight hundred metres from Buckingham Palace. The five-bedroom royal residence was built between 1825 and 1827 for Prince William Henry, Duke of Clarence, who later became King William.
