CBS will broadcast live coverage and special programming during morning and prime-time hours on September 11, marking the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks in the United States that occurred in 2001. CBS programming will also be available on Paramount+, while a selection of reports about the attacks and their aftermath from "60 Minutes" will be presented on CBSNews.com, Paramount+ and the CBS News YouTube channel.
CBS's efforts will join those of ABC News, NBC News, Fox News Channel, MSNBC and CNN. The 25th anniversary of the attacks has motivated many news organizations to offer more extensive programming, which in most years is linked primarily to the commemoration.
CBS News will launch coverage on "CBS Mornings," which will feature co-hosts Gayle King and Nate Burleson, along with "CBS Evening News" anchor Tony Dokoupil at Ground Zero in New York and "60 Minutes" correspondent Norah O'Donnell reporting from the Pentagon. Dokoupil and O'Donnell will launch a special 90-minute report at 8:30 a.m. that will cover memorial services in New York, Shanksville and the Pentagon. CBS News correspondents will report from New York, the Pentagon and the crash site of Flight 93 near Shanksville.
Dokoupil will return at 6:30 p.m. to anchor "CBS Evening News" live from Ground Zero. He will also present at 8 p.m. "We Remember," a special from Ground Zero that will feature three stories linked to the tragedy. Lesley Stahl of "60 Minutes" will revisit a report from the news magazine, reported by her late colleague Ed Bradley, that examines Summit, New Jersey, which lost nine residents in the attacks. Stahl will add details about how the city is facing its history.
Dokoupil will speak with a family who escaped the Twin Towers with their young son but lost the head of the family, while O'Donnell will interview General Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the United States. CBS will present "Daughters of 9/11" at 9 p.m., during which Elizabeth Miller, Jessica Trant and FBI special agent Frank Pellegrino investigate whether the man accused of being the mastermind of the attacks, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, will ever face justice.
