Dave Bautista will play the lead role of Kratos in the God of War adaptation for Prime Video. The project already has a two-season order and features Ronald D. Moore as showrunner, writer and executive producer.

The casting change came about following an on-set injury suffered by Ryan Hurst. Hurst, who has also appeared in Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead, was the actor originally selected for the role. Production had advanced far enough that a first look at Hurst as Kratos and Callum Vinson as Atreus had circulated. However, Hurst sustained an injury during an action sequence that required surgery and would keep him sidelined for several months.

The production team decided last month to conduct a new casting process rather than delay production until next year. According to reports, Bautista was the second choice, and that speculation is now official.
