The government on Monday said it would not proceed with plans to remove affordable housing quotas for private builders on medium-sized development sites after a consultation drew overwhelmingly negative responses.

Officials said there was significant opposition to the proposals, which would have ended affordable housing requirements for projects with between 10 and 49 houses. Housing experts had warned the changes could drastically reduce the supply of cheaper homes in rural areas.

The government said a new approach to the issue would be developed.
