The Premier League season opened with champions Arsenal meeting newly promoted Coventry City. Coventry's promotion to the top division had few observers predicting a result against the defending champions.

Coventry has a history of early-season upsets at Arsenal. The side scored in the 1993-94 opening day and again in 1991-92, when a Lee Dixon own goal contributed to an away victory while Arsenal were reigning champions. However, those wins came more than 30 years ago.

Arsenal have won all five meetings between the clubs in the 21st century, with the most recent coming in 2014. The match kicked off at 8pm BST.
