The Canary Islands are known primarily as a tropical paradise for holidays, but they also possess beautiful nature and some of the best-preserved historic buildings in the region. La Gomera is a prime example, with many 15th-century buildings still in use today.

The most notable building is the Church of San Sebastián, which dates from the early 15th century as a chapel and was expanded in the following centuries. The wooden ceilings, century-old paintings and altarpieces it contains are worthy of a visit in themselves.

The church's age connects it with several historical figures. It is said that Christopher Columbus visited the temple before setting off for the Americas.
