Australia's corporate watchdog has warned of a steep rise in scammers using deepfakes of celebrities and politicians to lure victims into phony investment opportunities. The Australian Securities and Investments Commission said the schemes have defrauded Australians of $7.4 million.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is the figure most commonly co-opted in the deepfake images, according to Asic. The regulator said the fraudsters use the synthetic images to promote fake investment schemes.
