After weeks of previews, Fontaines D.C. have announced their fifth studio album. Dopamine Chamber will be released on 16 October on XL, and the lead single "Marianne" is now available alongside a music video directed by Dave Meyers, a filmmaker known for viral videos with prominent figures in pop and hip-hop.
The album was produced by James Ford and comes after Romance, the Irish band's 2024 record which has been certified platinum. Romance catapulted Fontaines D.C. to commercial success with singles such as "Favourite" and "Starburster". However, according to the band, they do not appear to be embracing that position. "Marianne" is presented as a song about escapism partially inspired by the 2024 thriller series Ripley, previewing an album that supposedly questions what it means to pursue pleasure in a darkening world.
In a press statement, Fontaines D.C. frontman Grian Chatten explained that he spent time in Venice, Vienna and Sicily seeking inspiration for the lyrics. "I think Romance was maybe 60 per cent human and 40 per cent corrupted by automation, and a loss of feeling," he said. "This feels more like 60 per cent corrupted—the mask is putting itself on the face a bit more. I felt it would be more powerful to leave hope out and reflect the ugliness honestly. This needed to feel more like a catastrophic warning".
