Klay Thompson is one step away from signing with the Miami Heat after completing the termination of his contract with the Dallas Mavericks, according to reports from ESPN. Thompson is looking to join the Florida team on a two-year, 13 million dollar deal, with the second year of the contract being a player option.
The player gave up the 17 million dollars from his final year with the Mavericks through a buyout, motivated by his desire to play for a team with greater aspirations after the Mavs' 26-56 record in the last regular season.
The Heat targeted Thompson after completing the trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo in the preseason, which reshuffled the franchise's priorities for this campaign. Thompson would strengthen the perimeter in Miami's attempt to build a competitive roster around Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo.
Thompson leaves Dallas after two seasons averaging 12.9 points per game. He is the fourth-best three-point shooter in history with 2,899, a figure he will continue to increase with the Heat.
