Directed and written by Ross Boothe, who also composed 13 original songs, the film "Brotherhood: A Cinematic Musical" narrates the story of a Mexican immigrant and his evolving relationship with his lifelong neighbour. The production stars Broadway actor Mauricio Martínez, alongside Casey Elliott, a founding member of the tenor group GENTRI.
According to the official synopsis, the film tells the story of two neighbours whose lives become deeply intertwined. Jon (Elliott) is a lifelong American citizen, while Fabián (Martínez) is a Mexican immigrant who has spent more than a decade waiting for a resolution to his asylum request in the United States. As the men and their families navigate uncertainty and turbulence, they are challenged to see beyond labels and to rediscover what it truly means to be neighbours, Americans and human beings.
"This project is deeply personal for me. As an immigrant, this story touches me very closely at this moment," Martínez said in a statement. "It is about people, about the heart and about empathy, and music is such a powerful way to communicate those things. That is what moved me most about 'Brotherhood'."
Prior to the film's release, Boothe, Martínez and Elliott will embark on the "Love Your Neighbor" tour, which will include live performances, selected scenes from the film and roundtable discussions led by cultural director Liliana Bolaños with local leaders, authors and special guests. The tour begins on 29 August in Salt Lake City and concludes on 1 October in New York.
"Brotherhood: A Cinematic Musical" opens in select theatres on Friday, 9 October.
