Homer's adaptation of the Roman epic "The Odyssey" became the highest-grossing adult-rated film of all time, Universal Pictures reported on Thursday, 20 August. The film has generated $1.352 billion in worldwide box office revenue.
The film starring Matt Damon as Odysseus surpassed the previous record set by "Deadpool & Wolverine", which reached $1.338 billion in 2024, according to Box Office Mojo database.
The project debuted on the big screen on 17 July with initial worldwide earnings of $264 million, positioning itself as the largest opening in director Christopher Nolan's career, surpassing "Oppenheimer"'s figures. The film was shot entirely using 70 mm IMAX cameras and had an estimated production budget of $250 million.
The film tells the story of Ulysses, king of Ithaca, returning home after the Trojan War. The cast includes Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Elliot Page, Jon Bernthal and John Leguizamo.
