Magnus Ferrell, the 22-year-old son of actor Will Ferrell, is nominated for Best New Artist at the 2026 Video Music Awards. The musician's song "Asleep Talking" became a viral hit after Will Ferrell shared a snippet on Michelle Obama's podcast IMO, with the track debuting at No. 24 on the Billboard Digital Song Sales Chart.
Magnus began formal music training as a child through piano lessons and later joined a jazz band in his teens. He studied acting at the University of Southern California before pursuing music full-time and signing with Visva/Republic Records. His smooth R&B-influenced sound showcases his falsetto range.
Will Ferrell has been a prominent supporter of his son's career, performing on cowbell at Magnus' public debut at a Cancer for College benefit event and appearing alongside him on stage. The song "Slow Down" was featured on the soundtrack of Will's 2025 romantic comedy You're Cordially Invited.
Following the podcast appearance, "Asleep Talking" gained traction when celebrities including Heidi Klum, Charlie Puth, and Khloe Kardashian posted about the track. Magnus, who has half a million TikTok followers, previously toured with Nick Jonas and will serve as an opening act on select dates of an upcoming tour.
Magnus will compete against Bella Kay, CORTIS, Malcolm Todd, Myles Smith, Sienna Spiro, and Stella Lefty for the award. The VMAs broadcast live from Los Angeles on Sept. 7 on CBS, MTV, and Paramount+. Fan voting for Best New Artist will continue through the show itself.
