England and Wales experienced their driest July since records began, according to weather data, with reservoirs now at exceptionally low levels across the region.
Rain is expected to arrive in the coming period, but questions remain about whether the precipitation will be sufficient to replenish water stocks before the next summer season, according to Dr Anna Murgatroyd, a lecturer in hydrology at Newcastle University.
The depleted water supplies have increased the risk of flooding in some areas, Murgatroyd noted, while usage patterns will need to change to protect reserves going forward.
