Apple laid off employees from its Vision Pro and Siri teams as it redirects its focus toward smart glasses and next-generation AI technology, according to a report by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. The layoffs affect approximately 200 workers, with 100 reductions in the Vision Pro division and another 100 in the Siri and software divisions.
According to the report, Vision Pro layoffs are concentrated mainly in gaming and immersive video teams. The Siri cuts, meanwhile, target teams working on the earlier version of Siri assistant, as the new AI-powered Siri system requires personnel with a different type of expertise.
Apple acknowledged that it was making reductions and realigning teams based on a shift in its product mix. "While we will create new roles as part of this change, it will also affect a limited number of existing roles," the company said. "We are grateful to these team members for their contributions, and we are committed to supporting them through their transition, including opportunities to apply for other roles at Apple."
Apple informed employees that Vision Pro and its VisionOS operating system will not disappear, and the company still plans a new model for launch in 2028 at the earliest, Gurman wrote. However, with the company focusing its efforts on smart glasses that do not support immersive video or gaming, the cuts in those areas were likely inevitable.
