The cuticle is the thin layer of skin that borders the nail and its main function is to protect the surrounding area. For years it was considered unsightly and people sought to have it removed, but it is now recognised that keeping cuticles intact is important for nail health, according to beauty care specialists.

Cuticle and nail oils help keep these areas hydrated and nourished, also affecting the overall appearance of the hands. These products come in various formats: containers with droppers, brush applicators similar to nail polish, and pen-type applicators. They are applied with a gentle massage after manicure or pedicure to reactivate circulation, said experts consulted.

Reme Navarro, a graduate in Pharmacy, Nutrition and Dietetics and co-founder of Atida Mifarma, explained that these oils contain natural ingredients such as castor oil, almond, coconut and shea butter that hydrate and nourish the cuticle. When choosing a product, it is important to check that it contains pure plant oils, nutritious natural ingredients and antioxidant actives such as vitamin E, the specialist indicated.

The choice of oil should consider the specific needs of the nails. For dry or brittle nails, argan, jojoba or almond oils are recommended options. For gel or semi-permanent manicures, light oils such as jojoba or cherry are ideal so as not to affect their duration. Texture is also important, as some products are dense and take longer to absorb, added the experts.

Navarro recommended daily application, once or twice, especially at night before bed, allowing it to dry. Cuticle oils mainly hydrate the nail, strengthen it, help its correct growth, maintain its health and protect it from external agents to prevent infections, according to the specialist. She emphasised that consistency in application is essential for the product's effectiveness.
