Three years after his imprisonment for the murder of Edwin Arrieta in Thailand and two years into his life sentence in the Asian country, Daniel Sancho faces a critical moment in his legal proceedings. The Phuket Court of Appeals has issued its ruling on the appeal filed by his legal team, led by lawyer Marcos García Montes, and the sentence is expected to be made public shortly at the Samui Provincial Court.
According to experts in international law, the court could uphold the life sentence, order a retrial as the defence is requesting, reduce the sentence, or harden it. A possible reduction would favour a transfer to a Spanish penitentiary within no fewer than seven years, sources indicated.
Noela Aguirre, the Spanish chef's grandmother, broke her silence to express her unconditional support for Daniel as the family awaits the court's decision. She confirmed that the young man is "well" and that she has been able to communicate with him through a weekly video call from Surat Thani prison, according to García Montes.
Aguirre expressed that she misses her grandson "very much" and that her family trusts "fully" in Thai justice and in the accused's innocence. She expressed her wish to visit him as soon as possible and stated she has "very much" wanted him to be able to return to Spain to serve the rest of his sentence in the country.
Regarding her son Rodolfo, the grandmother noted that he is "very well", although she said she had no information about a recent controversy related to an image generated with artificial intelligence.
