The Guardian's fashion editor fielded reader questions on a range of topics including the prevalence of synthetic materials in high-end clothing. Cost is the primary reason manufacturers favour synthetic fibres over natural ones, the editor noted.

While natural fibres are generally a sustainable choice, the editor said, virgin polyester — derived from oil and non-biodegradable — should be avoided. However, sustainable synthetic options exist, including Tencel, a brand name for lyocell, which is made from wood pulp and biodegrades, the editor said.

The fashion editor emphasised that identifying what suits a person and what they like is the most difficult aspect of developing a personal style.
