Prince Bakery, based in the Bronx, New York, has recalled Prince brand bread products from the market because they may contain sesame or milk that is not declared on the label. The affected products are Italian Sesame Bread, Large Italian Bread, Large French Sesame Bread, Long French Sesame Bread and Spanish Style Lard Bread.

People with severe allergies or sensitivities to sesame or milk are at risk of severe or potentially fatal allergic reactions if they consume these products. The breads were distributed in bodegas and small retail shops in the Bronx and Westchester, New York.

The recalled breads are identified by being packaged in white bags with blue, green and red lettering and images. Among the products are Spanish Style Lard Bread 8 ounces (227 grams), Large Italian Sesame Bread 12 ounces (340 grams), Large French Sesame Bread 12 ounces (340 grams), Italian Sesame Bread 8 ounces (227 grams) and Long French Sesame Bread 10 ounces (284 grams). The products have a shelf life of 3 to 5 days but can be frozen.

The recall was initiated after a routine FDA inspection discovered that the Spanish style bread, which contains whey in its ingredients, was distributed in packaging that did not include milk in the "Contains" declaration. Likewise, the Italian bread and the large Italian and French breads did not include sesame in the ingredient list or in the "Contains" declaration. Subsequent investigation indicated that the problem was caused by a temporary failure in the company's production and packaging processes.

To date, no illnesses have been reported. Consumers who have purchased the recalled breads should discard the product. Those with questions may contact the company at 718-584-2127, available Monday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
