Research published in the International Journal of Sustainable Development examined eight nations involved in the Second World War, both Allied and Axis countries, and demonstrated how that historical period helped set societies on course towards the modern resource-intensive economies that predominate today.
The study links the military mobilisation of that era with the period known as the Great Acceleration, characterised by an increase in energy consumption, material consumption and, ultimately, by detrimental environmental impact.
