National Police arrested three migrants in Ceuta accused of attempting to rob and assault a Civil Guard officer who was off duty during the early hours of Sunday. The incident took place around 4:30 a.m. near a petrol station close to the port of the autonomous city, according to local reports.
The three suspects confronted the officer and attempted to force him to hand over money. When he refused, the Civil Guard officer was attacked with punches, kicks and blows, according to reports. The alleged attackers fled the scene and the officer reported the incident to the National Police, who launched a search.
The three suspects were located shortly afterwards at different locations in Ceuta and taken to police headquarters. According to available information, they are being investigated for crimes of attempted armed robbery and for disobeying instructions from officers during their arrest.
The incident occurs as Ceuta continues to deal with the consequences of a massive arrival of migrants. Thousands of people managed to enter Spanish territory, and although a significant number subsequently returned to Morocco, several thousand remain in the autonomous city.
