Adult content creator Sophie Rain expressed satisfaction at the primary election defeat of Republican gubernatorial candidate James Fishback, who had proposed imposing a 50% "sin tax" on earnings of those working in adult content production.
Fishback lost the Republican primary for Florida governor on Tuesday after receiving only 10.5% of the vote, placing him third by a significant margin. Republican Rep. Byron Donalds, endorsed by former President Donald Trump, won the nomination with 47.8% of the vote, easily outpacing 10 other candidates, while Lieutenant Governor Jeanette Nuñez came in second with 25.2%.
In statements to the New York Post, Rain, a 23-year-old content creator on OnlyFans, said she was glad to keep her earnings. She said she did not believe voters would support "targeting women and punishing them for doing a completely legal job." Fishback had pledged to impose the 50% tax on OnlyFans creators' earnings, saying the goal was to "reduce and deter" the adult industry. He specifically named Rain, claiming she would owe $42 million in state taxes under his proposal.
Rain responded that she does not oppose paying taxes and already pays millions monthly, but rejected the idea of a special "sin tax" targeting people like her based on a politician's disapproval of their work. She said she would support policies such as raising teachers' salaries or funding school meals, but called for "serious policy" rather than using content creators as a "political punching bag."
