Rainfall recorded during last weekend caused three deaths and severe flooding in Caracas. With new tropical waves expected to arrive, specialists warn that obsolete drainage systems keep both low-income neighbourhoods and the city's main traffic routes in permanent danger.

Experts have pointed out that the lack of maintenance and investment in drainage infrastructure continuously exposes Caracas residents to precipitation events. The ravines that run through the city are also operating at maximum capacity, further reducing the ability to absorb heavy rainfall.
