Noelia Jiménez, a hair stylist and salon owner in Madrid, has pointed out that introducing simple changes to your hair routine during summer allows you to return from holiday with hair in better condition. According to the expert, prolonged exposure to sun, chlorine and salt spray damages the hair fibre, but routines to minimise these effects need not be complicated.

Jiménez recommended applying specific sun protection to the hair and boosting hydration by doubling the use of nourishing masks to twice a week, as well as using conditioner with every wash. She indicated that wetting the hair with fresh water before entering a swimming pool or the sea reduces the absorption of chlorine and salt, whilst rinsing it immediately after bathing removes residue that can dry it out. The stylist also suggested opting for lukewarm or cool water and gentle shampoo when washing.

Among other recommendations, Jiménez advised minimising the use of heat styling tools during summer, using products specifically against frizz and getting a subtle trim before travelling so that the hair better withstands external damage. She stressed that there is no need for a radical change of style, but simply to tidy up the ends to prevent the damage from worsening.

The expert emphasised that when hair shows signs of dehydration or obvious damage, seeing a professional for a hydration or reconstruction treatment restores elasticity, strength and shine much more quickly. Jiménez insisted that small daily actions can prevent much of the damage and ensure that the hair arrives in perfect condition when you return from holiday.
