The Mexican Social Security Institute may reject pension applications for various reasons. To obtain retirement benefits under both regimes, workers must be at least 60 years of age.
Another essential requirement is the number of contribution weeks. Under Law 73, workers need a minimum of 500 contribution weeks. If they meet the age requirement but not the required weeks, the IMSS issues a pension denial.
In the case of Law 97, the minimum contribution weeks for 2026 is 875, a figure that will increase by 125 weeks each year until reaching 1,000 weeks in 2031. Workers who do not meet this requirement will also receive a pension denial.
In the event of a pension denial, there is a procedure called Total Withdrawal for Pension and IMSS Denial, which allows the worker to request the delivery of funds from their individual Afore account. For this, it is necessary to have the pension denial resolution issued by the IMSS and an updated identification file generated by the Afore with official identification documents and proof of address.
