Oma's Pride, based in Avon, Connecticut, is voluntarily recalling a batch of Woof Complete Canine Chicken Recipe in 6-pound packaging (batch BB012729) due to salmonella contamination. The recall was initiated after the FDA received a consumer complaint and subsequently collected and tested a product sample, which tested positive for salmonella.

Three illnesses in dogs associated with the complaint have been reported so far. Oma's Pride is continuing its investigation to determine the source and root cause of the contamination. The affected batch was distributed in Arizona, California, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, New Jersey, Nevada, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia through retail and wholesale accounts as well as directly to consumers via online orders.

Salmonella can affect animals that consume the product, and there is a risk to humans when handling contaminated pet products, especially if hands are not thoroughly washed after contact with the products or surfaces exposed to them. Healthy people infected with salmonella should monitor themselves for symptoms including nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea or bloody diarrhoea, abdominal cramps and fever. Salmonella can cause additional conditions, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation and urinary tract symptoms.

Pets with salmonella infections may experience lethargy, diarrhoea or bloody diarrhoea, fever and vomiting. Some animals may only have decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets may be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If a pet has consumed the recalled product and displays these symptoms, a veterinarian should be contacted.

Consumers with questions can contact Oma's Pride through omaspride.com by calling 1-800-678-OMAS, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. EST, or by email at hello@omaspride.com. This recall is being conducted voluntarily and in coordination with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
