The US Government announced on Friday new tariffs of up to 100% on the importation of drones and their components. According to the White House, the measure will take effect on 3 September and seeks to strengthen domestic production, mitigate risks to national security and reduce dependence on foreign suppliers.

The tariff scheme will be applied in stages according to the size and technical capabilities of the equipment. The maximum levy of 100% will affect drones exceeding 25 kilograms at takeoff weight, those equipped with thermal imaging systems, docking stations and components considered especially sensitive. Smaller drones without critical safety functions will be subject to a 25% tariff.

Imports from strategic partners will have differentiated rates. Devices and components from the European Union, Japan, South Korea, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Taiwan will pay a 15% tariff, while the United Kingdom will see its rate reduced to 10% provided that the technology, software and hardware originate in that country or in the United States.

This policy is expected to significantly impact the Chinese industry. China is the world's leading producer of unmanned aerial vehicles, and companies such as DJI Technologies, headquartered in Shenzhen, concentrated nearly 70% of the commercial drone market in the United States during the past year.
