A storm episode caused wind gusts of up to 149 km/h in the province of Valencia on Thursday, accompanied by hail and wet downbursts that caused material damage in several municipalities. The most affected areas were Cullera, Alzira and El Perellonet.
The most intense gusts were recorded in Sumacàrcer with 149 km/h and in Alzira with 143 km/h, whilst Corbera reached 125 km/h and l'Alcúdia 114 km/h. The wind felled trees and structural elements of buildings, and also caused problems on roads and railway transport.
In Cullera, a man was injured when an umbrella was blown away and struck him on the head at Racó beach. The storm tore off a balcony from a building and displaced or destroyed terrace furniture in the area.
In El Perellonet, a palm tree fell on several vehicles and another balcony was torn off by the wind with no injuries reported. In Alzira, one of the wet downbursts caused damage to the church of Santa Catalina, where part of a side wall was exposed, leaving the interior of the dome visible.
A tree felled by the wind affected line 2 of Cercanías, causing delays to other railway services. Firefighters attended to around a dozen incidents related to the storm in different municipalities in La Ribera.
